Although it seems like hurricane season just ended, this year’s hurricane season in just around the corner. In fact, the Atlantic hurricane season is generally considered to run from June 1 to November 30 each year.

Given just how quickly the dangerous hurricane season can manifest itself, it is never too early for Florida residents to ensure they are adequately prepared for these devastating storms. And while most people think of hurricane preparedness in terms of “battening down the hatches,” it is important for Florida residents to have adequate hurricane insurance as well just in case tragedy strikes.

Tips for Hurricane Preparedness

There is little doubt regarding the destructive nature of Florida hurricanes as these incredible storms often leave only devastation and damage in their wake. Consequently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has proffered several tips and guidelines that can help Florida residents not only prepare for hurricanes but also minimize their damage and risks when the powerful storms inevitably occur.

Some of the hurricane readiness guidelines outlined by the CDC include:

  • Make sure to stock up on home supplies that may be needed during the emergency period, including a 3- to 5-day supply of water and non-perishable food, a first-aid kit and plenty of batteries to power radios and flashlights.
  • Learn about the local community’s emergency plans, evacuation routes and all emergency shelter locations.
  • Cover windows with plywood or place strips of masking tape on the windows to reduce the risk of the windows breaking.
  • Fill the car’s gas tank just in case it is needed.
  • Identify possible home hazards and know how to deal with them before the hurricane. For instance, know how to turn off the electricity in case of standing water or fallen power lines.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher and ensure all family members know how to use it.
  • List all emergency phone numbers next to every telephone.
  • Find, and safeguard, all important documents, such as licenses, wills and insurance policies.

As the last tip indicates, it is important to keep insurance policies safe, but it is often even more important for homeowners to review their insurance coverage in order to make certain they have adequate insurance in case a hurricane does occur. After all, Florida homeowners do not want to realize that they have inadequate insurance coverage as they are filing their hurricane insurance claim – at which point it is too late. Specifically, homeowners should review their policies to see if they are covered for flood or water damage.
