The first is probably common sense for most–make sure that any leaks that exist are fixed. Look for leaks, not only on the roof for when storms occur, but elsewhere in the house as well such ceilings and under sink cabinets. Addressing leaks could reduce the chance of insects chewing soggy wood and rot, mold and mildew occurring.

Next, if you have a sump pump, make sure it is working. Designed to keep water from rising beyond a certain point in a house, a pump that is working correctly can prevent water from rising and damaging the house and its contents.

Last, make sure that the drainage around the house is good. This includes:

  • Ensuring gutters are not clogged.
  • Making sure that downspouts deposit the water they move a minimum of five feet from the house.
  • Watering the yard regularly so that upon a big storm expanding soil does not put pressure on the walls of your house.
  • Sloping the yard away from the foundation a minimum of 6 inches of a 10-foot span.

Even in situations where these precautions have been undertaken, it is still possible that water damage could occur. For that reason, homeowners in the state of Florida purchase insurance policies designed to protect them from the great expense these repairs could cost. When a insurance claim is denied, a water damage lawyer may be of assistance.
